EBAA is saddened to announce the passing of Herbert E. Kaufman, M.D.
Dr. Kaufman was a pioneer in the ophthalmology world and has an extensive list of accomplishments and discoveries.
Relating to eye banking and corneal transplantation, Dr. Kaufman was heavily involved with EBAA, most notably by transforming modern eye banking when he developed the first cornea storage media, M-K media, and later the first chondroitin sulfate long-storage media (K-sol). Eventually, he worked with Dr. Richard Lindstom to create Optisol, today’s most commonly used eye banking preservation medium.
Working with Dr. Bill Bourne, he also developed the specular microscope.
Beyond scientific discoveries, he restored sight to countless individuals, acted as a generous mentor to younger generations of physicians, and was a gifted teacher.
Our deepest sympathies extend to his family and loved ones, especially his son, Stephen C. Kaufman, MD, PhD, who continues his legacy of service to EBAA, ophthalmologic innovation, and sight restoration.
His official obituary is available online.
