Eye Donation Month: Meet Alexis

November 4, 2022

It is November, which is Eye Donation Month! All month long we’ll be:

  • Raising Awareness about cornea donation and transplantation
  • Honoring the gift of sight given by selfless donors and their families
  • Celebrating cornea transplant recipients living their fullest lives thanks to the generosity of donors
  • Educating about eye donation and encourage individuals to register as donors

The theme of 2022 Eye Donation Month is: A New View! It celebrates the new perspective on life that corneal transplant recipients experience after having their sight restored, and the change in viewpoint donor families express when the pain of a loved one’s death is at least eased by the opportunity to share the gift of sight with someone in need of a transplant.

The “face” of Eye Donation Month this year is Alexis Zorrilla! She is a grateful cornea transplant recipient. Living in New York City, she is a medical device sales representative. Her passions include travel, scuba diving, and modeling.

Alexis was on vacation in Mexico when she awoke to blurred vision in her right eye due to a corneal ulcer. She returned to the States for an emergency corneal transplant that restored her sight.

Both of Alexis’ grandmothers are blind, so she is well aware of the challenges that come with loss of vision. Because she never expected to be dealing with loss of sight at such a young age, having her transplant has given her a new perspective.

Alexis’ ‘New View’ is one of appreciation and gratitude! She enjoys exploring the city, and takes in all its beauty, spending time with her family, boyfriend, and beloved dog. Recently Alexis continued her love for travel with a Mediterranean cruise. Watch Alexis’ full story and other New Views on EyeDonationMonth.org.

We encourage you to give ‘A New View!’ by registering as a donor, today!
