Every time I turn around, I see news stories and announcements that I must pursue an active lifestyle in order to be healthy and happy. Even my phone nags me to walk more steps or earn more “heart points” – I think that just Google’s way of getting me out of the house so I can buy the stuff they sell ads for.
Here at EBAA, we’re not above jumping on the bandwagon to encourage our members to be more active. And we have two events coming up to help you do just that.
Run for Vision: Since 1986, EBAA has hosted our Run for Vision 5K in conjunction with AAO’s Annual Meeting. This year’s race, which is again sponsored by Bausch + Lomb, will be held in beautiful Golden Gate Park on Sunday, October 13.
Medals are given to the top finishers in each age bracket, but we’re really not watching your time, just encouraging you to get out and explore a part of San Francisco that you won’t see from the Moscone Center. Register today. Won’t be in San Francisco? You’re still welcome to register and “run from home” – we’ll send you the commemorative t-shirt!
Eye Donation Month: While you probably won’t break a sweat celebrating Eye Donation Month, your eye bank’s health will benefit if you take an active role in using the tools and resources that we’ve developed for our members. We’ve updated all our materials for distribution to your recovery partners and within your community, and are putting the finishing touches on a new video featuring a donor mother’s story about her son.
We’re hosting a free webinar on October 2, featuring Denise Gavilan and Dave Harrison from our PR consulting firm, to walk through the tools and to give advice and tips on how to use them to increase your visibility in the community and to generate media coverage for your eye bank. Register for the webinar here.
We also encourage you to join our ongoing social media campaign, “Eye Donation Month is Everywhere” during November. Take photos of your Eye Donation Month pins wherever you may have them – in front of a landmark, on the strap of your backpack or gym bag, etc., and post it on social media (be sure to tag us!) We’re looking forward to sharing your images. More details will be available during the webinar.
Experts say that even a little exercise is better than being sedentary, so come to Golden Gate Park and just walk the route – I promise to hold the last bus for you. Or just dip your toe into using the Eye Donation Month tools at your disposal by updating your website or Facebook page with some of the images we’ve created. You might find that stretching some unused muscles becomes a healthy habit.

Eye Donation Month: Using EBAA Materials to Promote Your Eye Bank and the Gift of Sight (FREE)
October 2 at 1 PM Eastern
November is Eye Donation Month, and EBAA has prepared a marketing toolkit filled with promotional materials for your organization. Find out how to best use the collateral that has been developed, and the theme “The Power of You” to share your mission and promote cornea donation within your community. Speakers will present the tools and discuss best practices for spreading the word about your eye bank’s work to the media to gain publicity and support for your mission. They will also introduce a fun month-long social media campaign to keep the Eye Donation Month buzz going throughout all of November. Attendees will also hear an eye bank professional share their past Eye Donation Month successes which increased awareness about their eye bank and cornea donation, ultimately strengthening important relationships and developing new ones. The session will close with the premiere of this year’s Eye Donation Month video.
Developing Ambassadors to Promote Your Organization’s Mission
November 6 at 1 PM Eastern
Sharing the transformative effect of donation and transplantation is an essential objective of any eye bank or organ procurement organization (OPO). While organizational staff can play a large role in sharing these stories, oftentimes, the message is most powerful when delivered directly from the people who have been most impacted. The speakers will provide specific examples of programs such as developing a speaker’s bureau, creating specific campaigns and telling stories digitally, working with physicians to reach recipients, training individuals to go out into the community to speak on the organization’s behalf, and much more! Join us for this session to learn how you can develop ambassadors for your eye bank!
2020 EBAA Annual Meeting: Call for Presentation Proposals
EBAA is collecting proposals for educational sessions to be presented during the 2020 Annual Meeting, June 17-20, 2020, at the Fairmont Dallas in Dallas, Texas. We are accepting presentation ideas for a variety of presentation opportunities including Keynote sessions, concurrent sessions, workshop presentations, brief tutorials, etc. If you have a suggestion for a topic and/or speaker that would be of interest to eye bank professionals and/or eye bank Medical Directors, we encourage you to submit a proposal.
If your topic is selected, you will receive $50 off of your meeting registration and will be entered into a drawing for a free night stay at the Fairmont Dallas or a free meeting registration. The deadline to submit a topic is Monday, November 19. Contribute to the meeting of the year for eye bank professionals and eye bank Medical Directors; submit a proposal today!
2020 Physician Leadership Program: Nominations Open Today!
The nomination period for the 2020 Physician Leadership Program (PLP) is now open! The 2020 PLP will take place March 7-8 at the Hotel Valencia in San Antonio, Texas. Eye banks are invited to sponsor a physician to attend this event.
Established in 2011, the PLP offers eye banks a unique opportunity to introduce physicians to eye banking early in their careers and to strengthen their relationship with your eye bank and with EBAA. Many previous program participants have subsequently served on the EBAA Board of Directors and various EBAA committees, become eye bank Medical Directors or Associate Medical Directors, received funding for research from EBAA, presented during EBAA events and educational sessions and much more. We expect the same for the Class of 2020.
Visit the Physician Leadership Program for more information, and send the link to any surgeons you wish to nominate. EBAA will cover all expenses for participants’ food, lodging and materials; sponsoring eye banks are asked to cover transportation to and from San Antonio. Executive Directors must provide a letter of support for their nominees, to be uploaded with the completed application. The nomination period will close on October 18, so nominate a physician today!
R.Townley Paton Society: Complimentary Membership Renewals Due by September 30!
EBAA is pleased to once again offer each member eye bank one complimentary R. Townley Paton Society Membership for the organization’s Medical Director. The Paton Society Membership term is January 1 through December 31 of each year and provides corneal surgeons a wide variety of benefits. Each Executive Director (ED) was contacted last week to confirm the Medical Director who should receive the complimentary membership for the 2020 membership year. If you are the eye bank ED or CEO, please confirm your Medical Director’s complimentary membership by September 30. If you have any questions, please contact Genevieve Casaceli.
The member packing tape allows eye banks to ship tissue with tape that clearly identifies the tissue as being provided by a member of the Eye Bank Association of America. Corneal blindness glasses are a great teaching tool for eye banks that do any type of community awareness and education.
Take advantage of the EBAA resources available to you; purchase tape or glasses today!
