At-Large Candidate: Brian Philippy, CEBT

Director of Transplant & Reserach, Lions Medical Eye Bank & Research Center of Eastern Virginia

Candidate Bio

Brian Philippy has served as an eye banker since 1997, starting at the Minnesota Lions Eye Bank, and currently serving the Lions Medical Eye Bank & Research Center of Eastern Virginia. Brian passionately believes in our collective Missions to serve not only the vision-impaired, but also those experiencing grief and loss. While that altruistic passion is Brian’s motive, using data in context to drive strategy and ethics is Brian’s mode. This mode and motive are infectious. Brian’s wife, Wanda, and daughter, Kendra, also serve as eye bankers with equal passion and even greater skill. Brian enjoys supporting Wanda’s leadership in the Boy Scouts of America and guiding Gage’s (his son’s) growth. Living the country life in Northern Michigan, Brian and Wanda love to fish, hike, camp, and play disc golf.

Candidate Statement

The most important current issue from Brian’s perspective is protecting U.S. eye banking from catastrophic for-profit consumption. Continued efforts to protect eye bank autonomy from self-destructive competitive practices, while best determining the path forward to ensure sufficient high-quality tissue supply domestically and more effective international routing for tissue excesses are also key issues. Brian also seeks to address increasing effectiveness of research tissue recovery and supply. With experience in all technical and quality aspects of eye banking, Brian also carries extensive analytical and strategic skill. Brian is a visionary who consistently approaches challenges with unconventional ideas. Brian is a “can do” person, not a “yes man.”
