The COVID-19 pandemic has upended all aspects of daily life, and EBAA and eye banking are no different. A recent survey of executive directors found that eye banks are operating at approximately 5% of their normal volume and that many have minimized or suspended their operations. EBAA staff, like most of our members, have been working from home since mid-March, with no clear timetable for when we can resume normal operations.
With this as the backdrop, and cognizant of the travel restrictions in place across the country, EBAA’s Board of Directors voted last night to transition our 2020 Annual Meeting (June 17-20 in Dallas), into a virtual meeting, hosted entirely online. The meeting will include the content you expect from our Annual Meeting, including educational sessions, governance meetings (Accreditation Board, MAB and House of Delegates), and elections for Board of Directors positions, as well as the Medical Directors’ and Scientific Symposia. All these sessions will be delivered online, with a combination of live and prerecorded content, and will reside online, where you can view it as you wish.
More detailed information about the agenda and meeting registration will be announced in the coming weeks. But we wanted to alert you about the meeting’s new format so you can plan accordingly.
This was not an easy decision for the Board; the Annual Meeting is the hub around which our association year turns – not only for its content, but for its community – it’s our single best opportunity to bring the entire profession together to connect with our friends and colleagues. That’s vitally important every year, but never more so than now. Unfortunately, that’s not possible this year, at least not in the way we’ve come to expect.
Instead, we will use your Internet connection to bring you as much of the substance, and the atmosphere, of our annual meeting as possible. The venue may have changed, but our members, and the amount of heart you bring to your work, remain the same.
We all look forward to seeing you through our webcams and online when we meet in June! Until then, please stay safe, stay heathy and stay in touch.
P.S. Members who had already registered for the Annual Meeting will be contacted soon to arrange for refunds of their registration fees.
